IPD gives awards to local students

Top honor students at four of the city’s educational institutions received a surprise visit from some of the Indianola Police Department’s finest on Thursday and they didn’t arrive empty handed. The caring cops provided honored students at Robert L. Merritt Jr. High, Indianola Academy, Carver Elementary and Restoration Ministries with certificates and trophies in recognition of their accomplishments. Sgt. Shabridget Caldwell said, “It’s just something we love to do.” This is the first year that the IPD has presented the achievement awards and Caldwell said they plan to keep it up. The officers are hoping that their gestures will be inspirational. “We hope to encourage other students to do their best, we want to encourage and motivate,” said Sgt. Ozie Carter.

He said they will visit the honor students at the other schools in the city at a later date.

Pictured with each set of students are officers, Markrikus “Bo” Hibbler, Marvin Myrick, Mark Johnson, Aaliyah Redmon and Jaques Johnson plus sergeants Ozie Carter, Shabridget Caldwell and Frank Brockman

The students awarded are: Merritt Jr. High—Dylen Bailey, Khalleecia Lee and Tynilya Watkins; Carver Elementary—Arianna Stanford and Mitchell Reece; Restoration Ministries—Amber Howard and Galveno White; IA—Lane Paxton and Alex Tannehill.
