Loved ones remember young woman shot and killed last Friday

On Friday, April 10, Alberta Garner’s life was cut short just before dawn after shots rang out on Garrard Avenue in Indianola.

Gardner is the city’s second female victim of gunfire this year, and according to police reports, she is likely the second innocent bystander to be killed in Indianola since March.

Garner was affectionately known as “Berta” or “Berta Bee.”

The month of April was supposed to be a month of excitement for her, because it held the birthday of her mother and  her brother.

Garner leaves behind: her mother, Bobbie Garner, her father, Earnest Lyons, and her brother, Charlie Garner, all of Indianola.

Aside from her immediate family, she had a host of relatives and friends who loved her.

“She was nice, loving (and) everybody loved her… just a sweet character all around” said Tracey Garner, her aunt.

Garner was always able to find ways to smile, even through the hard times.

Close friend and cousin Jacqueline Houston reflected on the changes that affected Garner such as losing her grandfather.

"That was really challenging, because he had cancer, and it was really difficult for us to see him like that,” said Houston.

Despite Garner’s hardships, she was still able to be compassionate to others.

“She was so giving,” said Houston. “If she had it, she would give to others with no hesitation. We have a lotta funny stories together. We were always laughing and joking. She was sarcastic but always meant well. She’s just a huge ball of energy and love.”

Houston says Garner valued achieving goals and becoming stabilized.

“One way I’ll honor her memory is by making sure her mom is taken care of and finishing up my social work degree and just keeping her memory alive,”  Houston said.

Houston plans to make sure Garner is never forgotten.

Graveside services for Garner will be held Saturday.
