MHP Memorial Day Enforcement period starts today

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is going to be working overtime this weekend to try and keep the roads safe.

The Memorial Day Enforcement Period started at midnight and will conclude Monday.

MHP said in a release this week that relaxing COVID-19 restrictions and lower fuel prices could lead to heavier traffic on the roads.

“State Troopers will place emphasis on saturation patrols to combat speeding and reckless driving,” the release said. “Drivers should avoid text messaging or any driver distraction that could endanger lives and to have sober designated drivers in place when necessary.”

MHP will also take part in OPERATION CARE, the Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort, which is a national effort to increase officer presence on Interstate and U.S. Highways across the nation during specific high crash periods, the release said.
