Mississippi’s sales tax holiday is less than 24 hours away.
This year’s holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and will end at midnight on Saturday.
For those 24 hours, sales tax is not due on articles of clothing, footwear or school supplies if the sales price of a single item is less than $100.
The sales tax holiday has long been a boost for local businesses throughout the state, and it is a chance for shoppers to support local while enjoying the savings.
“Shopping Indianola is more important now than ever,” said Cherrie Britt, with Indianola Chamber Main Street. “Our business owners need every single one of us to help them stay here and continue to serve our community. They are always here for our families. It’s our responsibility to be here for them. They love and take care of our children whenever called upon.”
Britt said local businesses often support sports teams, school annuals, football programs and contribute door prizes and gift certificates for community events.
“They are always here serving in Indianola,” Britt said. “They offer some really great items for back to school. Shop Indianola first.”
Items priced at more than $100 are subject to the regular 7% sales tax rate, according to the Mississippi Department of Revenue.
Rentals of items are not eligible for tax-free purchases.
“Clothing” is defined as any article of apparel designed to be worn on the human body including pants, shirts and blouses, dresses, coats, jackets, belts, hats, undergarments and multiple piece garments sold as a set.
“Footwear” is defined as any article of apparel for human feet except for skis, swim fins, roller blades, skates and any similar items.
“Accessories” as jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches, briefcases, and similar items do not qualify for the Sales Tax Holiday.
“School Supplies” are defined as items that are commonly used by a student in a course of study.
