An Indianola woman was shot and killed outside a local business early Sunday morning.
Beatrice Williams, 23, was pronounced dead at South Sunflower County Hospital shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, according to Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton.
Burton said in a press release on Sunday that she was notified around 1:47 a.m. by the emergency room staff at the hospital that a female “had been brought in with a gunshot wound and did not survive.”
Burton said Williams received a single gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m.
The shooting apparently occurred during a party that was being held at a nearby business near the corner of Sunflower Avenue and Main Street.
As of publication time, The E-T’s multiple attempts to reach investigators with the Indianola Police Department have been unsuccessful.
According to at least one person who was in attendance, a fight that had broken out inside the establishment spilled outside. Shortly after, multiple shots could be heard, but it is not confirmed whether the shots fired had anything to do with the altercation.
Williams apparently was an innocent bystander.
Burton said that Indianola Police Chief Edrick Hall advised her that the shooting had occurred on that corner around 1 a.m.
“The victim has been transported to the medical examiner’s office for autopsy in accordance with state law,” Burton said. “The investigation into the shooting is being handled by the Indianola Police Department.”
Burton expressed her sympathies to Williams’ family.
“This death, along with other shooting deaths that have occurred in our city are preventable tragedies,” she said. “Please urge your friends and loved ones to refrain from randomly firing weapons. Remember, Bullets shot into the air always come down somewhere.”
