A tough night of basketball for all the North Sunflower Academy Rebel teams this past Tuesday. Tunica Academy was in Drew and walked away with all four wins. The JV teams were the closest to tasting victory but the JV Lady Rebels fell 44-39 while the JV Rebels had an even closer defeat, 52-50. The Lady Rebel Varsity put a valiant effort but lost by eight while the Rebel varsity were never in their game posting a large deficit loss to the Blue Devils.
Next up for NSA hosting West Memphis today at 4:00 p.m. and Lee Academy Arkansas on Tuesday January 18. Lady Rebel Head Coach Anthony Rivera was proud of his team’s efforts on Tuesday night.
“We got into foul trouble. We had some strict referees so I didn’t want to press like we had been doing the past few games,” Coach Rivera said. “It was a good close game and we lost the game down the stretch. I think if we could have stayed with our press plan there would have been a different outcome.”
The Lady Blue Devils dropped some late game three pointers to take the lead and put the game away.
“When we were trading two pointers it was a close game but then they started hitting their three’s,” he said. “I was proud of the effort in both teams. They played the game all the way through. If they give me effort, I can live with any lesson learned at the end of the game.”
The JV Lady Rebels clinched second place in their division.
“The District Tournament will be at Marvell from January 24th through the 28th,” he said.
Coach Rivera is looking for some good games with West Memphis as the Lady Rebels notched the wins last year.
“But they’ve recruited quite a few players this year,” he said. “They are pretty decent and have a good basketball team this year.”
