The Adult Education (AE) program at Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) will hold registration for new students from Oct. 18-21 on the MDCC Moorhead Campus, at the MDCC Greenwood Center and at the Greenville Higher Education Center.
A student who has been a part of this program for several years is Linda Woodard.
"I came here in 2016, I think because I wanted to do something else with my life," says Woodard. "I stopped going to school in the 11th grade because I had trouble getting there."
While Woodard has been working toward taking the General Education Development (GED) test to achieve her high school equivalency diploma, she has completed several other goals.
Woodard has put a large amount of her focus on math, an area in which many students struggle.
New MDCC AE Director Christopher Lee praised Woodard for her immense success. He specifically highlighted her success on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), which is used to measure student progress.
"In the fiscal year of 2019-2020, Linda achieved an MSG in Math, increasing her initial TABE score by 25 points, a tremendous increase. Because of these tremendous strides, Linda, who entered as a Level 2 ABE Beginning Student, is now at a Level 3 ABE Intermediate student in all three subject areas of the TABE," said Lee.
Woodard encouraged anyone who is considering attending AE classes to do so with a serious mindset.
"In these classes, the teachers really teach you," said Woodard. "If you're coming up here to play, you might as well stay at home, but if you're coming to focus and do the work, they will do whatever they can to help you out and get you where you want to go."
Lee similarly encourages students to attend the classes if they feel ready for a second chance in life.
"Adult Education not only gives individuals a 'second chance' at a quality education that they may have missed out on at an earlier time, but it provides a warm and friendly atmosphere of educators that are willing to go the extra mile for their students," explained Lee. "If you're an individual, ages 16 and up, looking for that second chance, come out and experience this dynamic atmosphere where anything is possible, during our October 18th-21st registration at all three of our MDCC locations. We'll see you there."
