55 Years of Freedom: Death of Emmett Till set stage for Freedom Summer

Editor’s Note: This is Part 3 of a series The E-T has compiled commemorating 55 years since Freedom Summer 1964. Freedom Summer represented a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement and many of the battles fought for equality were waged right here in Sunflower County.









Smith pinned as nurse at HCC

The Ridgeland Campus of Holmes Community College held a Pinning Ceremony for the graduating Practical Nurses  on June 20. Nineteen students were honored during the ceremony, and among the graduates was Sunflower County native Veronica Lachelle Smith.

Women of Influence: Miskia Davis

Miskia Davis is entering her third year as head of the Sunflower County Consolidated School District. In just a short time, the Montgomery County native and Drew transplant has made headway with the district’s elementary students, with an over 90 percent pass rate on this year’s third grade gate test.

UAB, Head Coach Bill Clark, finally set free

Shortly before Alabama mounted a historic come-from-behind win against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game last Saturday, another Yellowhammer state team was putting the finishing touches on a conference title of its own.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham defeated Middle Tennessee State 27-25 for the Conference USA title.
