JMG Student of the Week

The Jobs for Mississippi Graduates Gentry Student of the Week is Sylvester Washington. The junior Indianola native plans to pursue a career in sports management with a dream job of being an NFL coach. His favorite hobbies are making money and hanging out with friends. Lott, Muncher to exchange vows

Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Todd Lott, of New Albany, announce the engagement of their daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Lott, to Garon Grant Muncher. 

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wesley Lott of Greenville and the late Mr. and Mrs. James Rhodes Hughes of Inverness.

Katie Stewart

Services for Katie Stewart of Shaw will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Byas Funeral Home’s Hayes Chapel.

Ms. Stewart, 96, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2019.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at Byas Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Gardens.




Ira Talmadge Crosby

Ira Talmadge (Brother Tal) Crosby loved loving Jesus and is now at home with his Heavenly Father. Tal passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, after reaching the age of 88 years. After months of failing health, he died very peacefully in his home in Seymour, Tenn., with his loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren by his side.


Willie Spurlock Jr.

Services for Willie Spurlock Jr. of Indianola will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Beulah Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Spurlock, 72, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2019.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Byas Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Gardens.


Bobby L. Boyd

Services for Bobby L. Boyd of Indianola will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity House of Prayer, Moorhead.

Mr. Boyd, 62, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Byas Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Gardens.


Betty Sue Mallette

Betty Sue Mallette, 80, of Indianola, passed away Friday Sept. 13, 2019, in Pontotoc.

She was born Aug. 25, 1939, to Leon and Margaret Smith of Cleveland.  Betty Sue worked for Planters Bank and Trust in Indianola for many years. She had a deep love for her family and her Savior, Jesus Christ.

UAB, Head Coach Bill Clark, finally set free

Shortly before Alabama mounted a historic come-from-behind win against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game last Saturday, another Yellowhammer state team was putting the finishing touches on a conference title of its own.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham defeated Middle Tennessee State 27-25 for the Conference USA title.

Church encourages athletes to ‘pursue God’

Prayers, motivational videos, games, prizes and inspired biblical encouragement combined with great food and fellowship constitutes a winning combination.
And once again Pastor Guy Burke, First Baptist Church and other community members teamed up to provide that enriching experience for local high school football athletes.





MAIS addresses final plays at state title game, will advocate replay

It was the play that changed Indianola Academy’s season.


The game-winning overtime touchdown pass lobbed into the end zone on second down by Starkville Academy running back Taylor Arnold sent the otherwise undefeated Colonels home from Jackson Academy with their only loss of the season on Nov. 18.




Community gathers for first of many meetings on school facilities
