College Street bridge project still on hold

Even though the College Avenue Bridge is already designed, has received grant application approval and is ready to be advertised, the long-awaited bridge project has hit another roadblock enroute to completion.

That’s in spite of the fact that the full cost to replace the structure was covered in the initial application.


Willie Mae Hankins

Services for Willie Mae Hankins of Indianola will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Beulah Missionary Baptist Church.

Ms. Hankins, 82, died Tuesday, Mar. 12, 2019 at South Sunflower County Hospital.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Dillon Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.


Sheneique Hawthorne

Services for Sheneique Hawthorne of Indianola will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Christian Fellowship Church of God in Christ.

Ms. Hawthorne, 30, died Friday, Mar. 15, 2019.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Byas Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.


Sue Harper

Sue Harper, 76, of Senatobia, formerly of Indianola, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at her residence.


Bertha Bernard

Services for Bertha Bernard of Indianola will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church.

Ms. Bernard, 94, died Tuesday, Mar. 12, 2019.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Byas Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Gardens.


Ida Warren

Services for Ida Warren of Indianola will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses Church.

Ms. Warren, 80, died Monday, Mar. 11, 2019.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Byas Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Gardens.

Sunflower County under "enhanced" risk for severe weather Saturday

The National Weather Service in Jackson said this morning that Sunflower County, along with the surrounding area, is in “enhanced risk” of strong storms on Saturday.

According to the latest information, NWS says damaging winds up to 70 miles per hour, along with large hail and tornadoes are possible on Saturday and Saturday night.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham defeated Middle Tennessee State 27-25 for the Conference USA title.

City says “Concerned Citizens” group can’t meet in public building

After a lengthy debate, the Indianola Board of Aldermen voted 3 to 2 against allowing use of a city-owned building to the Concerned Citizens Committee to conduct its regular monthly meetings.
Alderman Marvin Elder made the motion to allow.
“Let’s not hold them up,” he said. Alderman Ruben Woods seconded and they both voted yes.
