Lawrence Wilburn Long V debuts

Mr. and Mrs. Will Long of Indianola proudly announce the birth of their son. Lawrence Wilburn Long V on April 27, 2020 at Woman’s Hospital in Jackson.

Lawrence weighed 7 lbs. 4 oz. and measured 19¼ inches long.

He is welcomed by his sister, Mary Critz Long, age 3.





YANKY 72 memorial to be live-streamed

The third annual YANKY 72 memorial ceremony will be live-streamed.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the only event that will be taking place is a brief ceremony on  Friday, July 10 at 6 p.m.

Community members are encouraged to stay home and watch the ceremony online, which will be streamed on the YANKY 72 Memorial Facebook page.


Heidi Collins

Graveside services for Heidi Collins of Greenville will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Greenville.

Ms. Collins, 84, died Saturday, July 4, 2020 at Arbor Walk Nursing Home, Greenville.

Byas Funeral Home, Greenville is in charge of arrangements.



Maple Wright

Graveside services for Maple Wright of Indianola were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 8 at Indianola City Cemetery with Pastor Adoris Turner II officiating.

Ms. Wright, 81, died Sunday, June 28, 2020 at South Sunflower County Hospital.

Dillon Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


James “Tee Man” Buck

Visitation and funeral services for James “Tee Man” Buck of Indianola will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Byas Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Buck, 65, died Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Gardens.

Parchman inmate escapes

The Mississippi Department of Corrections is searching for an escapee from the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.

Arthur Lestrick, 40, was confirmed missing early Sunday morning from Unit 28, a work camp. He is believed to have left on foot.


Monuments, flags are Mississippi’s “lost cause?”

This serves as a constant reminder to many residents that the battle ain’t over, in America. As a quick refresher, the Civil War was fought in this country from April 12, 1861- May 9, 1865.

Loved ones remember young woman shot and killed last Friday

On Friday, April 10, Alberta Garner’s life was cut short just before dawn after shots rang out on Garrard Avenue in Indianola.

Gardner is the city’s second female victim of gunfire this year, and according to police reports, she is likely the second innocent bystander to be killed in Indianola since March.
