Legislature Dedicates $275M in Federal COVID-19 Funds to Rural Broadband, Distance Learning Programs

Rural broadband expansion and K-12 distance learning initiatives will receive almost a fourth of the Coronavirus Relief Fund, under a package appropriated by the Mississippi Legislature.  Mississippi received $1.25 billion in unallocated federal aid to soften the pandemic’s health and economic blow to the State.

Lawmakers at the Capitol have had an extremely busy last two weeks.  After many hours of working in conference committees to finalize the state budget and other bills, legislators completed most regular session work on Thursday, July 1.   The Legislature could come back in October or before if needed as laid out in House Concurrent Resolution 6

Howard G. Jue of Indianola passed away to be with The Lord on June 27, 2020 with his family by his side.  A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by: his wife, Susanna; their children, Susan (Scott), Debbie (Richard), Katherine (Paul), Dianna (Tony) and Terry (Kaity); and six grandchildren.

The long-ago Lost Cause for which the American Civil War was fought is embedded in Mississippi’s official state flag.

This serves as a constant reminder to many residents that the battle ain’t over, in America. As a quick refresher, the Civil War was fought in this country from April 12, 1861- May 9, 1865.



Parchman inmate escapes

The Mississippi Department of Corrections is searching for an escapee from the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.

Arthur Lestrick, 40, was confirmed missing early Sunday morning from Unit 28, a work camp. He is believed to have left on foot.

Loved ones remember young woman shot and killed last Friday

On Friday, April 10, Alberta Garner’s life was cut short just before dawn after shots rang out on Garrard Avenue in Indianola.

Gardner is the city’s second female victim of gunfire this year, and according to police reports, she is likely the second innocent bystander to be killed in Indianola since March.


Healthy State, Ole Miss football programs good for everybody

Die-hard Mississippi State football fans who basked in the forced resignation of Hugh Freeze in the summer of 2017 and in the NCAA’s subsequent destruction of the Ole Miss football program hopefully have come to understand that such outcomes are not good for either side of that rivalry, nor the state as a whole.
