Flashback: Sunflower County no stranger to census controversy

It’s census time in Mississippi, and if you’re wondering why so many are encouraging everyone to get counted now, it’s probably because Sunflower County has had trouble in the past in this area.

According to 1980 edition of The E-T, Indianola challenged the count that year, even though the numbers were not final at the time.

Did you know that Indianola was the first city in the Delta participate in the 911 emergency system?

According to the October 1, 1970 edition of The Enterprise-Tocsin, Indianola became “the first city in the Delta to install the 911 emergency telephone number and is one of only a few cities in the nation to have this service.”

There’s a lot to be said about the dwindling population in the Mississippi Delta.

That trend continues to negatively affect the region’s healthcare, education and economic development.

On Friday, April 10, Alberta Garner’s life was cut short just before dawn after shots rang out on Garrard Avenue in Indianola.

Gardner is the city’s second female victim of gunfire this year, and according to police reports, she is likely the second innocent bystander to be killed in Indianola since March.
