Healthcare in Sunflower County is about to change drastically, thanks to an influx of new doctors who will be training in Indianola as part of a new family medicine residency program based out of Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville.

The number of official COVID-19 cases in Sunflower County rose by just two between Monday and Friday, from 11 to 13.

But Indianola physician Dr. Hannah Ray, who is literally on the frontlines locally battling the novel coronavirus, says the number of cases in the county is probably much higher.

On Friday at 12:46 p.m., a Battle Street man said a 21-year-old Maybelle Street man broke into a 2002 Honda Accord owned by a 26-year-old Battle Street woman.

Mayor: Sunflower County has first case of confirmed COVID-19

It appears that Sunflower County has its first confirmed case of the new coronavirus COVID-19. 

Few details are available but Indianola Mayor Steve Rosenthal confirmed the case in a Friday evening post. 

The Mississippi State Department of Health had not confirmed the case in its daily report of confirmed cases on Friday.

Murder suspect in custody

A suspect who had been wanted in connection with the death of an Indianola man late last week is in custody, according to the Indianola Police Department.

IPD reported Thursday that LaDarius Snipes, the suspect named by police in today’s print edition, has been arrested and charged with first degree murder.

Ship builders wanted: Ingalls Shipbuilding comes to Capps Center in search of labor

Ingalls Shipbuilding is expecting to build more than just ships.

The Pascagoula-based company is hopeful that its collaboration with the Capps Center and the state’s community college network will enable them to assemble a fleet of trained and qualified pipefitters who will want to come to their shipyard to work.
