God gave me a job I didn’t go to school for

It amazes me how awesome God is.

The gift that He put on the inside of you will truly make room for you! (Proverbs 18:16) I graduated from Rust College with a Bachelor of Social Work degree, and with that degree, I was blessed with a position within the Department of Human Services in the state of Georgia.

During my five years as a Child Support Agent, I developed a passion for photography and started my own business. I attribute a large portion of my success to my sister, Lauren Lawson, who was gracious enough to lend me her camera to get started.

Like any business, Rickey Lawson Photography has had its ups and downs, but always managed to remain! Shortly after I started my photography business, I needed a website.

I figured I would just do some research and find out if there was a free website I could use to showcase my work. Eventually, I was able to design a pretty nice website by watching YouTube video tutorials! It wasn't until I designed a website for my mother that this new skill dawned on me.

My mother called me one day and said, “Rickey, I got a call from someone who tried to sell me some services to help advance my website, but instead of selling me services, they complimented me on the site and said, ‘you don't need anything...your site looks great!’”

When my mother told me this, it really boosted my confidence in designing websites.

I thought to myself, maybe I could start designing for other people as well. At that moment, Rickey Lawson Photography expanded from photography to designing websites.

After landing a few clients, I was excited to see that someone valued my work, other than those who were closest to me. I needed to start marketing my services, so again, I needed to research and figure out how to do this. I ended up researching digital marketing and learning as much as I possibly could.

When I finished learning and practicing this new skill, I added it to my web design packages.

All of a sudden, I had the skills to take photos, design websites, and market them online. The perfect ingredients to help any business grow!

Over the past 5 years, I’ve developed a skillset and completed various projects that allowed me to create a freelance resume within the digital marketing arena.

This resume came just in time as my wife and I answered the call of God to leave Georgia and move to the Mississippi Delta to fulfill what He has called us to do.

Following the instructions that the Lord gave us, I quit my job with the state and we moved, but little did I know that this was where I would land my first job in the digital marketing arena.

I saw an opening for a social media coordinator in the town of Greenville and I said to myself, “you know what, I'm going to apply for this job and use my resume for digital marketing, the field that I didn't go to school for.” I applied for the job and God not only blessed me with the job but gave me the salary that I desired as well.

As I reflect, I can see where that passion and desire to learn moved me into position to receive the current job that I now have.

I am learning new things from a corporate standpoint that I can implement into my personal business on a daily basis.

I believe God is now positioning me to take my business to the next level.

Never be afraid to pursue what God has put on the inside of you because your gift might just take you to some amazing places.

God bless you!
