Sunflower County Extension Agent Alex Deason addressed the Indianola Rotary Club this week. His topic was the common, but many times hard to fight, infestation of fire ants. Deason gave some background on how fire ants arrived in the U.S. from South America, decades ago, by ships. He laid out three methods of fighting them off, including types of baits, mound treatments and individual ant treatments. Deason said fire ants are hard to kill, even in the harshest winters down South, so homeowners must be diligent about keeping up the fight.
