Phillystity Gray, a senior at Gentry High School and a member of Girl Scouts Troop #30123, decided to give back to the residents of Sunflower County by hosting a food give-away.
“I was inspired to do this project,” said Gray. “There are people not able to get food.”
With the assistance of Girl Scout Troop #30123, Gray was able to collaborate with Turner’s Downtown Market, USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program and Uncle Jerry’s Farms to give out over 500 boxes of food, which included fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy products.
They were able to give away every box of food at the site.
She also gave out pamphlets on COVID-19 and healthy eating habits.
Troop Leader Shequite Johnson has watched Gray evolve while serving as head of the local Girl Scouts troop.
“When Gray initially joined Girl Scouts, she was very shy, did not like to interact with others,” Johnson said. “She hated to take pictures, but over the course of the last three years she has come around and she’s more engaged.”
Gray’s project doesn’t end here.
She plans to have another food giveaway in the coming months.
