A former Marine Raider, who is making his way across the country on bicycle, made sure that the YANKY 72 monument in Itta Bena was on his list of stops. Aaron Vanderbeck is on a mission to raise awareness of three Marine Raiders he feels were unjustly charged with manslaughter. He made his way through the Delta a week ago, stopping for a prolonged visit at the memorial along U.S. 82.
“There’s always points of opportunity, you know,” he told The Greenwood Commonwealth last week. “There’s veterans parks where it’s nice to honor those sacrifices and families, but this is the most significant one for me, personally.”
Vanderbeck is pictured above at the memorial last Wednesday morning.
