John Elton Britt, 76, of Indianola, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, at his home.
John was born June 14, 1945, in Washington, DC, to Amos Edward Boyer Britt Sr. and Carrie Lenore Powell Britt. He earned his associates degree in agriculture technology from Mississippi Delta Community College, his bachelor's degree in ag engineering technology and business from Mississippi State University and his master’s degree in education from Mississippi State University. John served in the Mississippi Army National Guard for many years. He married Donna Fay Turner on July 30, 1967, and together they made their home in Indianola. John farmed for many years and after retiring, he taught horticulture at Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. He then went to work for Mississippi Delta Community College where he taught aquaculture and then horticulture. After his retirement from teaching, he went to work as a crop insurance adjuster. He loved this most of all because he enjoyed all the people he met. John was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church in Indianola. He had served as the chairman of diaconate and as Sunday school superintendent. John was a former member of the board of directors at Mississippi Delta Community College.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alice Britt Varner; and son, Eric Turner Britt.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Donna Turner Britt of Indianola; daughter, Cristin Britt Beshears of Tallahassee, Fla.; son, John Elton Britt II (Sunshine) of Indianola; brother, A.E. Boyer Britt Jr. of Indianola; and five granddaughters, Grace Hamilton Beshears, Caroline Turner Beshears, Suzanne Whitelaw Beshears, Brianna Presley Britt and Mary Madeline Britt.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at First Presbyterian Church in the fellowship hall. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Duncan Hoopes and the Rev. Bobby Turner officiating. Burial will follow in Indianola City Cemetery.
