A private graveside service for Deveria Jean Kent Smith of Indianola will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Riverside Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Melvin Walker will officiate at the service.
Mrs. Smith, 81, passed away at her home Saturday, July 25, 2020.
Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Byas Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Smith was a longtime educator at Gentry High School for 30 years. She received her bachelor's degree from Mississippi Valley State University and a master's degree from Mississippi State University.
She was a faithful member of Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, John Smith of Indianola; one son, Randelon Smith (LaTreka) of Memphis; two grandchildren, Owen John Smith and Olivia Daisy Smith, both of Memphis; three brothers, Wallace Kent Jr. (Lille) of Los Angeles, Joe Lee Kent (Zelda) of Indianola and Taylor James Kent (Patricia) of Evergreen Park, Ill.; three sisters, Virginia Kent Baker and Shirley Kent Young, both of Chicago and Deloris Dell Kent Landfair (Earl) of Indianola; one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Taylor of Indianola; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, classmates, neighbors and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in tribute to Deveria Jean Smith.
