Getting close to home

All of us at some point in our life are excited to be going to our earthly home. Once we get within a few miles the anxiety of being with our loved ones and friends become something we are looking forward to. No one has to prompt us to be ready for the arrival because we are excited and our heart is jumping with joy.

I am sure that most of us have experienced these feelings of getting close to home and the excitement builds within us about seeing loved ones. With these great feelings of getting to go home we also prep ourselves beforehand for the arrival. We have our bags packed and our trip itinerary is planned so that all of our time is scheduled to make memories.

With all of this happiness about reaching home as we know it on earth, what about our home that is awaiting us in Heaven? How much do we really think about going home when Jesus gives us the call? Are we as prepared to enter the gates of our heavenly home as we are our earthly home? The Lord has given us a body to live in while we are on this earth and it is our responsibility to take care of this temple. How many of us really take care of our bodies the way the Lord told us to?

So many of us take our bodies for granted and do not take care of them. Why is it that we do this knowing that the Lord gave us this body so that we can serve Him through it? We are told in 2 Corinthians 3:16-17; “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.”

How many of us really think about the day we will be called home? Not many I would think and I was one of those people. I love the Lord and praise Him with all my heart and look forward to the day that He calls me home to be with Him. However I have neglected to take care of His temple and got away from taking care of my body by not eating and exercising correctly. The Lord gave me a wakeup call through a heart attack but has allowed me to live on a few days, weeks, years, who really knows except the Lord.

Even though as a Christian, I look forward to the day I can live with the Lord, I wasn’t adequately prepared for this event. I didn’t really know how close to going to my heavenly home I was until the doctors told my wife had we gone two hours further down the road I may not have lived to write this devotional. We were fortunate to be close to a hospital even though we were travelling and about seven hours from our earthly home. I thank God every day for my wife who got me to the hospital and to the doctors who opened up the arteries with stents so I could live another day. I will take care of this temple that God gave me from now on with the help of my wife.

Getting close to home is very exciting unless we do something wrong to create problems. I love going to my earthly home and came close to going to my heavenly home because I wasn’t taking care of what the Lord gave me.

Accept Christ as your Lord and Savior today and be prepared to meet Him at any moment.
