100 YEARS AGO,

JULY 1920

LEGAL NOTICE: It is unlawful for any person to sell meat from a wagon within the limits of Indianola by order of the Board, signed W. M. Lockhart, Mayor.

EDITORIAL BY J. A. RICHARDSON: There is talk of the United States going wet again, but between the prohibitioners and bootleggers there ought to be enough votes to keep things as they are.

LOCAL NEWS: A suspicious looking man arrived by train last Saturday carrying a very heavily laden suitcase.  Our law men had suspicions of contraband and ordered him to open his suitcase. The man replied “Yes, Sir and promptly opened the case to reveal three heads of cabbage and a peck of okra to the disappointment of the officers.

50 YEARS AGO,

JULY 1970

AROUND THE TOWN BT MRS. R. M. YARBROUGH

Dr. and Mrs. Walter Rose and son, Sammy, and other relatives have just returned from a trip to Yellow Stone State Park and other points of interest.

Mrs. Leroy Smithhart and daughter, Carolyn, and Mrs. Joe Clements and daughter, Leigh, just returned from Georgia where they visited relatives.

THANK YOU CARD: Mrs. Inez Williams wishes to express her love and appreciation for prayers, visits, cards, and other remembrances during her recent hospital stay.

FARM BUREAU NEWS: Farm Bureau officers presented County Agent Cecil Black with a check to pay his expenses to visit his son in Germany. Presenting the check were outgoing president James Robertson and new president Rodgers Brashier. This was in appreciation for his service to Sunflower County for over 25 years.

25 YEARS AGO,

JULY 1995

SPORTS: The City of Indianola Junior Tennis League consisted of players Lauren Moore, Ashley Rochelle, Jessica Davis, Madaline Phillips, Wil Skelton, and Frank Phillips, coached by Fred Myles.

COLLEGE NEWS:

Howard Davis of Indianola has been named to the Dean’s list at Baylor University. Students must maintain a 3.7 GPA to be included. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Q, Davis,

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT:

Mr. and Mrs., Keith Daniel announce the birth of their son, John Reid born July 14. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Franklin of Indianola.

LOCAL NEWS: Indianola Municipal Judge John T. Haltom has tendered his resignation since he has qualified to run for Supervisor. The board appointed Howard Q. Davis to replace him.

15 YEARS AGO,

JULY 2005

Carolyn Henry, 81 of Madison, formerly of Indianola died July 26 at The Arbor in Ridgeland. She was a pioneer in the game of tennis in the Mississippi Delta. After her children left for college, she played competitive tennis and won over 55 senior titles over 22 years. She was a member of the MSCW Hall of Fame, the Mississippi Tennis Hall of Fame, Southern Tennis Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

UPDATE ON HOWARD DAVIS

Twenty-five years ago, Howard Davis was making the Dean’s List at Baylor University. Today he is the Headmaster of Providence Classical School in Bossier City, Louisiana which he and his wife Melissa founded twenty years ago. The school started out for children in their early educational years and is now a school for K4 through the 12th grade with over 500 students. The school is based on Christian principles. Howard is Reverend Howard Davis as he is now an ordained Presbyterian minister. The Davises are the parents of five girls.
