Dozens gathered at B.B. King Park on Thursday morning for a solemn and uplifting event commemorating the 24th anniversary of September 11, organized by AmeriCorps Seniors chapters from Sunflower, Humphreys, Washington, and Bolivar counties.
At 11 a.m., community members assembled near the park’s iconic B.B. King statue, joined by members of the Indianola Fire Department and a fire truck standing proudly in the background. The event paid special tribute to the courage and service of first responders and sought to strengthen local bonds through remembrance and gratitude.
Attendees released 49 red, white, and blue star-shaped balloons as “The Star-Spangled Banner” played, honoring those lost on 9/11 and celebrating the resilience of their communities. The ceremony’s highlight—the balloon release—served as a visual reminder of hope and patriotism.
Following the memorial, gathered residents shared a picnic lunch with Indianola firemen, fostering connection and appreciation. Monica Hope, chief executive officer of Sunflower-Humphreys Counties Progress, Inc., said the day was about “honoring the bravery and sacrifice of those who serve, past and present, while bringing neighbors together.”
Such commemorations are vital in helping Sunflower County and surrounding areas reflect on tragedy, express gratitude to those who protect and serve, and strengthen the spirit of community for years to come.
