You know, the genius of the NFL Draft Room from 1960-1988.
The legend that drafted legends. The man who dug up talent where no one was looking and turned them into NFL Gold Jacket Wearing Hall of Famers.
I know he’s been retired for a bit but I gotta talk to him. I keep waiting for my name to be called on that historic Thursday night in April for quite some time. The NFL Draft is tonight and Brandt is the man that can make me somebody!
Now I’ve been waiting for that call, even though my career stopped in the ninth grade with All Conference Honors. For years I’ve been trying to track down our game film from that season but it’s been mysteriously missing for decades.
I just know that Brandt has those films and has been breaking down that undefeated CDA Championship team from 1977. I had 26 or 29 unassisted tackles playing weakside outside linebacker. Oh, yeah, Buck Duncan et al would sacrifice and take out all the blockers and it’d be me – mano a mano – with the ball carrier. I don’t remember losing any of those battles…lol.
I just know Brandt has been sitting on these films and the whole lot of us, Lewis Poindexter, Hubert Lester, William Reed, the McClellan twins, Tony Johnson and more will hear our names called in that first round and we’ll all go help somebody win that Super Bowl hardware to cap off our careers. We will shock the NFL and the football world when we all join in via Zoom to accept our draft position and team (Please be the Dolphins)!
Now if this all seems silly, just remember some of the folks Mr. Brandt brought on board. Track star and NFL HOF Bob Hayes, kicker Toni Fritsch, Drew Pearson, Cliff Harris and Everson Walls. The man had the sense to take Roger Staubach and Herschel Walker and hold onto their rights until they could play for him.
He’s got two Super Bowl rings and is a member of plenty of Hall of Fames himself. Now I’m not a Cowboys fan but Brandt’s a winner and know he’s just waiting to help some team make it to the promised land with the right talent. Mr. Brandt, I’ve got a play or two left in me and for a couple of million, you’ve got them! Lol.
