A Tuesday morning collision between a school bus and a car on U.S. Highway 82 resulted in one injury to a motorist and no serious harm to the 19 students aboard the bus.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 82 and Faisonia Avenue when the school bus, identified as bus 21-02 was heading south and attempted to cross the highway.
At the same time, a car with two occupants was traveling eastbound. The two vehicles collided on the eastbound side of the highway, causing the bus to strike a fire hydrant.
In a statement posted on the Sunflower County Consolidated School District's Facebook page, officials expressed their awareness of the accident and confirmed that their nurses quickly arrived on the scene to assess the situation. They noted that no students were injured and expressed gratitude for the safety of the students and the bus driver. The district also extended thoughts for the driver of the other vehicle.
Emergency Medical Services evaluated the driver, who apparently suffered a broken arm and was transported by ambulance to Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood for treatment. Parents were encouraged to check on their children after the evaluation, while some students were transported to school on a different bus.
Local police and sheriff's deputies responded to manage the scene, while the public works department addressed the water flow from the damaged fire hydrant.
