The resignation of former city prosecutor Jennifer Adams-Williams earlier this month prompted the Indianola board to hold a special meeting last Thursday to appoint a replacement.
Adams-Williams resigned days after a municipal court verdict that dropped all charges against a resident related to a vicious dog biting incident that took place back in March.
She had been the prosecutor on that case.
Attending last week’s meeting were Mayor Ken Featherstone, City Clerk Stephanie Washington, Ward 1 Alderman Gary Fratesi, participating via phone; Ward 3 Alderman Ruben Woods, also via phone; and Ward 5 Alderman Sam Brock, who was physically present.
The primary agenda item was the appointment of attorney Mack Arthur Turner as the new city prosecutor.
Mayor Featherstone introduced the item to hire Turner for the role. Ward 5 Alderman Sam Brock made the motion to appoint Turner, seconded by Ward 1 Alderman Gary Fratesi. The motion was approved unanimously.
Turner’s appointment is part of the city’s efforts to ensure ongoing legal proceedings and effectively address local issues.
After the meeting, Attorney Turner expressed his enthusiasm. “I'm honored to continue serving the city,” he said. “Whenever the city needs me, I’m here. This is an important role that addresses many issues, and I believe working together, we can make Indianola a better place to live.”
Turner’s contract was approved on Tuesday night.
The board voted to increase the rate of pay for the prosecutor position from $350 per week to $500 per week.
