The hope was that the Indianola Academy Colonels would claim a District 1-4A victory Thursday night.
Playing the final game of their three-game series against visiting North Delta School of Batesville, the Colonels were hoping to salvage a district victory over the Green Wave.
While the results of that game were unavailable at press time, the IA squad took a 6-12, 1-4 record into that day’s action.
The Colonels opened the series this past Tuesday in Batesville and suffered a doubleheader defeat, losing by 12-0 and 13-3 scores.
Baseball action continues for the Colonels this next Monday with a 5:30 p.m. non-district date with Deer Creek School in Arcola.
A return to District 1-4A competition occurs next Tuesday when a trip to Holly Springs will find the Colonels taking on Marshall Academy in a doubleheader.
While first pitch of that day’s twin bill is scheduled to be thrown at 4 p.m., the Patriots will come to the IA field next Thursday to complete this three-game series.
This single game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
In additional baseball action this past week, the Colonels split a pair of non-district contests.
Earning a 9-3 victory a week ago over Greenville St. Joseph High School, the Colonels suffered an 8-7 loss last Saturday to Pillow Academy in Greenwood.
In their victory over St. Joe High, the Colonels used 11 hits to help plate their runs.
Ty Killebrew led this offensive effort as the sophomore drilled a pair of doubles to go along with a single.
Additionally, freshman Patrick Davis contributed a double and a single to the cause while senior Graham Howard stroked two singles in the game.
On the mound Blayne Fleming went the distance for the Colonels in his seven-inning winning effort.
Fleming’s stellar performance scattered six St. Joe hits while accumulating five strikeouts and issuing only one walk.
In their tough loss to Pillow Academy, the Colonels saw an 8-6 lead disappear in the bottom of the seventh – and final – inning.
The Mustangs capitalized on hit batters and IA errors to help plate three runs and claim the game.
The loss was suffered despite IA outhitting the Mustangs 8-7 over the course of the game.
Slaton Helms and Killebrew paced IA’s attack with a double apiece while Levi Williamson’s time in the batter’s box produced a pair of singles.
