With a pair of recent home-field victories to their credit and Spring Break coming to an end, the Indianola Academy baseball team is now preparing for the return of regular season play.
In their recent action this past week, the Colonels claimed a 7-6 decision over Pillow Academy last Friday, then followed that up with a 17-0 tournament win over Greenville High School this past Tuesday night.
Those victories left the Colonels owning a 4-7, 1-2 record upon entering their final day of tournament play; an evening of play which occurred this past Wednesday.
In that day’s tournament action, the Colonels took on the Flashes of St. Aloysius High of Vicksburg.
The results of that game were unavailable at press time.
As for their return to regular season play next Monday, it will be Tunica Academy which will serve as IA’s destination and competition for this upcoming 6 p.m. non-district game.
However, next Tuesday will find the Colonels back on their home field to take on O’Bannon High School of Greenville. This clash with the Green Waves has the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 6 p.m.
In their recent four-inning win over Greenville High, the Colonels accumulated 14 hits and eight walks to help earn their 17-0 win over the Hornets.
While Graham Howard’s three hits included one double, Slaton Helms added a single to his solo home run over the left field fence.
Patrick Davis also drilled a triple to go along with a single and Ty Killebrew’s night at the plate earned a double and a single.
Also drilling a pair of singles was Easton Lloyd while Ethan Hayes stroked a double.
On the mound, Killebrew, Blayne Fleming, and Hayes combined to allow but one hit by the Hornets while striking out 11 batters and walking two.
As for last Friday’s 7-6 home-field victory over Pillow Academy of Greenwood, the Colonels once again put together a late-game rally to claim the game.
In a tightly fought contest, and with the score knotted at six runs apiece after four innings of play, the Colonels plated the game clincher in their half of the sixth frame.
The Colonels would manufacture that winning run after Graham Howard reached first base after being hit by the pitcher.
The speedster then stole second base before moving to third base with a Davis ground out.
However, it would be Fleming delivering the go-ahead run with his clutch RBI double.
Fleming would then return to the mound at the top of the seventh inning to attempt to close out the game.
Picking up the win on the mound while facing the top of the Mustangs’ batting order, Fleming used a pair of strikeouts and a force-out ground ball to end the game.
The Colonels accumulated eight hits in this contest with Fleming’s double, two singles, and two RBI’s pacing the IA attack.
Killebrew also registered three singles against the Pillow Academy pitching staff during his time in the batter’s box.
On the mound, the pitching trio of Davis, Hayes and Fleming combined to limit the Mustangs to eight hits while striking out six and walking two batters.
