With the opening of the MAIS 2025 football season just a week away, two Sunflower County teams will test their mettle tonight in jamborees.
For Indianola Academy, a trip to Lee Academy in Clarksdale will be the destination of the Colonels to compete in a pair of scrimmages.
Head Coach Tommy Nester’s squad, bent on improving on the 3-8 record earned last season, will initially take the field at 6 p.m.
The Colonels’ first opponent will be Regents School of Oxford.
This scrimmage will serve as the first-ever football meeting between the District 2-2A Colonels and the District 1-2A Lions.
The Colonels will then return to the field at 7 p.m. to take on the host Lee Academy Colts.
A longtime opponent of IA, Lee Academy is also a member of District 1-2A competition.
Meanwhile, on the north end of Sunflower County, the North Sunflower Academy Rebels embark on their goal of accumulating a better record than the 1-9 mark earned last season.
Traveling to Deer Creek School in Arcola today, new Head Coach Jacob Henley will see the Rebels begin their day’s play with a 6:30 p.m. scrimmage against Humphreys Academy of Belzoni.
The Rebels will then close out their day’s competition with an 8 p.m. matchup with the Warriors of Deer Creek School.
As for the Gentry High Rams and the Tigers of Thomas Edwards High School in Ruleville, a scrimmage is planned for both teams next Friday night (August 22).
Details will appear in next week’s edition of The Enterprise-Tocsin.
