They picked up a huge win at the most opportune time.
For this past Monday night on their home field, the Indianola Academy Colonels baseball team recorded their initial District 1-4A victory of the season with an exciting 8-7 decision over Kirk Academy of Grenada.
The walk-off victory improved the Colonels’ record to a 2-6, 1-1, mark that they carried into Thursday night’s series-road-trip finale against the Raiders.
The results of that contest were unavailable at press time.
Meanwhile, baseball action will remain near-constant for the Colonels as today they will find Pillow Academy of Greenwood visiting the IA field for a 6 p.m. contest.
Next week’s Spring Break will then see the Colonels competing in a 12-team tournament to be hosted at four different schools.
Participating in this tournament along with IA are Carroll Academy, Clarksdale High School, Cleveland Central High School, Greenville Christian School, Greenville High School, JZ George High School of Carrollton, Kirk Academy of Grenada, Manchester Academy of Yazoo City, Riverside High of Avon, St. Aloysius High of Vicksburg, and Tunica Academy.
In Monday’s action, the Colonels will play Greenville Christian School at noon and then return to their home field at 4 p.m. for a clash with St. Aloysius High School.
Other host sites for Monday’s tournament games include Riverside High, Manchester Academy, and Cleveland Central High School.
The top four seeds emerging from Monday’s action will return to Indianola
Academy’s field on Tuesday to determine the tournament champion.
Action that day will commence at noon with the championship game to be played at 4 p.m.
In their recent huge win over Kirk Academy, the Colonels overcame a 7-2 deficit with a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the game at seven runs apiece.
After freshman pitcher Patrick Davis rendered the Raiders scoreless in the top of the seventh frame, the Colonels responded with the game-winning run in their half of this final inning.
Using small-ball to score their walk-off run, the Colonels used an infield single by Levi Williamson to begin the rally.
After Ethan Hayes coerced a base on balls out of the Kirk Academy pitcher, an Easton Cook single loaded the bases.
Graham Howard then came through in the clutch as his infield single plated Williamson with the game-clinching run.
The Colonels would have seven batters who helped accrue the 10 hits recorded in this contest with Kirk Academy.
It was Davis leading the way as he drilled a double and a pair of singles during his time at the plate.
Howard also added a double to his walk-off single while Hayes stroked a double as well against the Raiders pitching staff.
On the mound Davis picked up the win with his five innings of relief work.
The righthander scattered four of Kirk Academy’s eight total hits while striking out two and walking one batter.
The Colonels had opened their Monday doubleheader against Kirk Academy by dropping a 5-1 decision to the Raiders.
With both teams accumulating four hits in the contest, an Easton Lloyd single plated Davis for IA’s lone run.
On the mound, Hayes and Ty Killebrew effectively threw four and three innings respectively in this losing effort.
Hayes’ time on the mound surrendered three hits while fanning two batters and walking five more.
Killebrew’s trio of innings limited the Raiders to one hit while striking out three and issuing only one base on balls.
