Good Mornin’! Good Mornin’!
It’s an age-old question for anything that’s been built, cooked, created or imagined.
What is the best ____ that you’ve ever ____?
TV shows and Facebook polls argue what’s the best car, food, dog, relative and much more. But as everyone figures out, it’s a matter of personal preference and taste usually not built upon a firm foundation of facts and chemistry.
I can’t smell and I have people argue with me that I can’t taste. Yes, I can. I know what tastes good, like fried shrimp at Peasoup’s or Doe’s hot tamales.
I know what tastes bad, like anything with mushrooms, pineapple or coconut. I can taste spicy and not so why do I need to know if something needs more cinnamon or a hint of garlic? It’s all about what you know.
Who’s the best athlete? Well, first I think of folks I played with or against, folks I saw play in high school or college and then there’s the folks who nearly ran over me or fell on me at professional sporting events.
I’ve seen Marcus Dupree in person playing in the USFL as well as Herschel Walker. There was nothing spectacular those days that I can remember but just knowing their stories and who they were made them bigger and better in person on a three-yard run.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten?
The food channel goes crazy with versions of this with famous chefs and cooks. Though some are dishes that most folks will never afford or even travel near to a majority are simple foods that are attached to a memory. I’ll never find better cooked fried shrimp than Peasoup’s no matter where I roam and I’ve roamed through zip codes in five states thus far in my life. Is there a better hamburger than what Miss Fanny created back in the day in Inverness or Miss Scott’s flat top burger creation outside of Morgan City before the tornado took that from us?
What’s the best truck? Well, I grew up in a GM family with Chevys lining the gravel driveway. I wrote about GMCs for a living and have owned two and wouldn’t trade them for any other brand. Is it the best? You’re dang, skippy right it is! But I’m not writing this to stir up an argument with my Dodge and Ford truck friends and acquaintances.
They have their roots and connections to their V8 devotion and I won’t fault them – much.
The best of anything? It’s always a matter of opinion and opinions are like…well, you know. Simply said, my best is not your best and vice versa but we can still share the same pew at church and I hope we will.
