FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MDCC Lineman Training Complex Named
MOORHEAD, Miss. (Aug. 31, 2022) – The lineman training field at Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) has officially been named the Sims-Whitworth Lineman Training Field at a naming ceremony last Wednesday, Aug. 24.
The program began with a welcome from MDCC President Dr. Tyrone Jackson and was followed by an invocation from Baptist Student Union Director Josh Warren.
Jackson then gave remarks which included a history of the lineman training program at MDCC before the dedication of the facility was made by MDCC Vice President of Workforce and Economic Development Todd Donald.
The ceremony was concluded by South Delta Planning and Development District Workforce Director Mitzi Woods unveiling the Sims-Whitworth Marker.
The Sims-Whitworth Lineman Training Field is named after Joe Sims and Randall Whitworth who were the first instructors in the program in 2010. With over 77 years over combined experience, Sims and Whitworth instructed students in the classroom as well as in the field.
Sims retired in 2018 after serving for eight years as an instructor. Whitworth is still instructing in the field that bears his name.
The lineman facility, which includes a two-acre training field and a 4,000 square foot building, held its first class in 2019 after MDCC’s Electrical Utility Lineman Program outgrew its previous facility and funding was secured through federal, state, local, and private funds.
