Annual Tree Giveaway
The Sunflower County Soil & Water Conservation District will host two tree giveaway days. The first giveaway will be in Ruleville at Lovett’s Auto Parts on THURSDAY, FEB. 13, and the second giveaway will be on FRIDAY, FEB. 14 at the USDA Service Center at 212 N. MLK Jr. Drive in Indianola. There will be hardwoods and some ornamentals available. They will begin at 8 a. m. at each location, so come early – supplies are limited.
Retired Education Personnel Meeting
The Retired Education Personnel of Sunflower County will meet at 1 p.m. FRIDAY, FEB. 14, at the Indianola Library. All retirees are invited to attend.
Youth Entrepreneurship Bookcamp
GAP Leadership Program announces that the 2nd session of Youth Entrepreneurship Bookcamp will take place from 1-3 p.m. SATURDAY, FEB. 15, at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church, Indianola. “Love is in the Air” Valentine Gala
The Moorhead Chamber of Commerce will host a Valentine Gala at 6 p.m. SATURDAY, FEB. 15, at the Moorhead Library meeting room. The theme is “Love is in the Air” and the speaker will be Rev. Gary Perryman, pastor of Higher Heights M.B. Church, Moorhead. All are invited to come enjoy good food, music and fellowship! Wildlife Dinner and Seminar
The Washington County office of MSU Extension Service will host a Wildlife Dinner and Seminar at 6 p.m. SATURDAY, FEB. 15, at their 148 N. Edison Street, Greenville, location. They hosted this event for several years pre-COVID and are bringing the event back. James Callicutt, who specializes in waterfowl and upland game birds, is coming from the MSU campus and will be delivering the seminar. Entry to the event is $10 or a wildlife dish that will feed 6-8 people in one of three categories: main meat dish; casserole; misc. (get creative!). S.O.S. for Healing Conversations
The local monthly “Safe Online Space (S.O.S.) for Healing Conversations,” an anonymous, judgement-free and secure online chatroom session for sexual assault victims/survivors, will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. MONDAY, FEB. 17. Anyone affected by sexual violence, whether it happened to you or someone you care about, can find support. Annual Black History Program
Sunflower County NAACP #5333 will present its annual Black History program at 3 p.m. SATURDAY FEB. 22, at the B.B. King Museum. The theme for this year’s program is “Saving the Mississippi Delta through Economic Development, Job Training Opportunities, Education, and Crime Prevention.” Senator Derrick Simmons of District 12 will be the guest speaker.
Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurship
The Dorothy I. Height Quad Counties Section of Negro Women will host a session on Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurship at 3 p.m. SUNDAY, FEB. 23, at First United Baptist Church, 720 Coolidge Street, Indianola. Monroe Golden, assistant principal at Gentry High School, will be the speaker. The public is invited.
BeSMART: Control Your Diabetes for Youth
The BeSMART: Control Your Juvenile Diabetes program is continuing at the B.B. King Museum from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the FOURTH TUESDAY of each month (next date – FEB. 25). Hough-Dement Animal Shelter Needs Your Help
Indianola’s Hough-Dement Animal Shelter is in immediate need of volunteers and supplies, but most importantly volunteers as there is currently one employee at the shelter. Aside from volunteer personnel, the shelter is always in need of dog food, cat food, bleach, collars, toys, cat litter, treats, small blankets, old linens (especially towels), and rags.
