Grenada Police Department Chief George Douglas confirmed in a press release just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday that four individuals suffered various degrees of injuries following a shooting Monday night on North Lynch Street.
Chief Douglas identified the victims as 34-year-old Marilyn Gardener, 39-year-old Lee Andrew Lofton, 43-year-old Jeff Foster and Marcus Holmes, an adult male, age not determined. All victims were transported by MedStat Emergency Medical Services ambulances, which were escorted by law enforcement, to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Grenada where three were immediately airlifted.
Two UMMC AirCare helicopters and a third out of Columbus landed back-to-back-to-back to transport the victims to nearby hospitals for treatment of their injuries. A large crowd gathered in front of UMMC-Grenada, while the gunshot victims were loaded on the helicopters for transport. Conditions of the victims remain unknown.
According to reports, officers with the GPD responded to the shots fired call at 7:51 p.m. North Lynch Street is only a couple of blocks from the Grenada Police Department and the Grenada County Sheriff’s Office.
First responders work the scene of a shooting Monday night on Lynch Street where multiple people were injured.
“Upon arrival, the police discovered that numerous people had been shot at a North Lynch Street apartment,” Chief Douglas said. “The police determine through investigation that the shooter(s) fired into the apartment from the outside. The shooter(s) fired through window(s) and all of the victims were inside the residence at the time of the shooting.”
The four victims add to four additional shooting victims from four early Sunday morning shootings for a total of eight victims in less than 48 hours. In the first of the Sunday shootings, 36-year-old Charles Santez Coffey was shot and killed, and a 9-year-old girl was also shot and injured. Reports indicate that automatic weapons were used in the shootings.
GPD officers and deputies with the GCSO worked late into the night and early morning Tuesday, saturating areas by patrolling “hot zones” for possible suspects. The majority of the Grenada Police Department was on duty in full force, according to Chief Douglas.
“Some individuals were arrested for unrelated crimes not connected with the shooting,” Chief Douglas concluded. “However, law enforcement will continue to patrol in this manner in order to bring the situation under control.”
The GPD is once again requesting the public’s assistance in providing any information related to this shooting by calling TIPS Line at (662) 227-TIPS (8477).
The shootings, which investigators believe are connected “in some manner,” remain under investigation.
