Multiple wrecks and fires kept Sunflower County's volunteers busy this week.
• At 10:25pm, Monday, February 28, Rescue Co 2 and the Inverness Volunteer Fire Department (District 2) responded to a single-vehicle crash on US Highway 49 near Southside Road. One of the two-vehicle occupants was transported by MedStat EMS to the emergency room for evaluation.
• At 7:49 pm, Tuesday, March 1, the Moorhead Volunteer Fire Department (District 3) responded to a natural gas leak in the 300 block of Birch Street in Moorhead. Firefighters stood by until utility company representatives arrived.
• At 11:55 pm, Tuesday, March 1, Rescue Co. 1 and the Indianola Fire Department (District 1) responded to a motor vehicle crash involving two cars in the 1600 range of US Highway 49 near Gwin-Lipnik Road. The crash resulted in one fatality. A second, critically injured patient was transported and later transferred to a trauma center. MedStat EMS, Sunflower SO, Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, and the Sunflower County Coroner's Officer also responded to this incident.
• At 3:57 am, Wednesday, March 2, volunteer firefighters from several districts responded to a residential structure fire in the 100 block of Craig Avenue in Sunflower. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions with fire venting through the gables on arrival. The majority of fire was contained in the attic, but the destruction of roof support members resulted in ceiling collapses throughout the structure.. Volunteer firefighters from Sunflower (District 4), Moorhead (District 3), Linn-Steiner-Roundaway (District 9), Rescue Co. 1, and the County Fire Coordinator's office responded.
• At 6:01 pm, Thursday, March 3, the Ruleville Volunteer Fire Department (District 6) responded to a grass fire near the intersection of Walker Rd. and Lusk Rd. The fire was small, but it damaged a utility pole, requiring replacement by the electric company.
• At 9:34 pm, Thursday, March 3, the Moorhead Volunteer Fire Department responded to a car fire in the 1100 block of Pine Street.
• At 1:41 pm, Friday, March 4, Rescue Co. 1 responded to a multi-vehicle crash in the 400 block of US Highway 82 West near Marie Ave. Four patients were transported to the hospital for evaluation. Other agencies that responded were MedStat EMS, Indianola Fire, Indianola Police, and Sunflower SO.
