On Thursday, January 26, the town of Drew witnessed the oening of a new business.
Dollar General has found a home at 4218 Highway 49 North.
When The Enterprise-Tocsin asked Drew Mayor Melanie Townsend how she feels about the new business opening, with a slight chuckle she replied, “I am excited and overwhelmed with joy. It’s another revenue for the city.”
Not only will Dollar General provide another place for citizens to shop and get their basic necessities without traveling far, it will provide employment opportunities, benefits and some security for families.
With Lalarry Hogan as the manager, the store will be open daily from 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
Townsend was excited and thankful to see the Drew Board of Aldermen there to support the grand opening. She shouted out the following people for the part they played in the new business, “Danny Clark is the one who made it possible; he sold part of his land for us to be able to get the Dollar General. Stafford Shurden assisted me with bringing Dollar General to Drew as well. The city officials, City Clerk Patricia Johnson, and Public Works Supervisor Melvin Matthews assisted also, and I am very grateful for them and their key roles with making this possible. I would like to thank the citizens who came out in support of the new store in our community.”
Townsend has been the mayor of Drew since 2021. She said she has been trying to bring a new business to Drew for a long time. With Dollar General and the continued support of citizens, other businesses, the board, and all other stakeholders in the city, she is hopeful that Drew will become the place that others love and take pride in by saying, “We will rise again.”
