Drew Mayor Melanie Townsend-Blackmon announced last week a $104,000 grant for the construction of a walking trail in the northern Sunflower County town.
Townsend-Blackmon expressed her enthusiasm for what could be a significant investment aimed at enhancing local infrastructure. The grant from the Mississippi Transportation Commission would be utilized to develop a new walking trail for the citizens of Drew, promoting health and community engagement, she said.
"We are thrilled about this grant," Townsend-Blackmon told The Enterprise-Tocsin. "It represents a step forward in providing our residents with better recreational facilities and enhancing the quality of life in our community."
In addition to the trail project, Drew is gearing up for its annual Mardi Gras celebration. Scheduled for March 2, at 5:30 p.m., the event will feature a parade sponsored by Stafford Shurden, owner of Stafford’s on Main and the host of the Gas Station Food Review on social media.
Festivities will take place downtown. Townsend-Blackmon is eager for residents and visitors alike to join the celebration, highlighting its importance in fostering community spirit.
"We're looking forward to everyone coming together to celebrate," she said. "Events like these bring us closer as a community."
The city is also making strides in addressing infrastructure improvements.
The mayor revealed plans to renovate local streets and is actively seeking bids for cleaning out the old Drew Rosenwald School building, which is part of a broader initiative to revitalize the area.
Bids are due by February 28, and the city council will vote on the proposals shortly thereafter.
"We're moving things forward and are committed to improving our community," Townsend-Blackmon said. "There’s a lot happening in Drew, and we’re excited about the future."
