A week can make a world of difference in college basketball, particularly at this time of the year.
A week ago, Mississippi State’s men’s team looked like it might not make the NCAA Tournament’s field of 68. It had lost its last four regular-season games entering the SEC Tournament. A first-round loss and the Bulldogs were probably headed for the NIT.
But a victory over LSU was followed by an even more improbable rout of Tennessee, one of the top teams in the country. And after a respectable showing against Auburn in a losing effort in the semifinals, MSU is being picked by some, including former coach and now ESPN analyst Tom Crean, as a sleeper candidate to make the Final Four.
That’s probably a huge stretch, but crazier things have happened in this sport. That’s why so many people love the March Madness.
