The Thomas Edwards High Tigers now have an open date to get over their tough loss to Greenville High School.
And it was indeed a hard-to-swallow 32-28 loss that the now 1-3 Tigers are having to digest.
The 3A member Tigers gave the visiting 6A member Hornets, now 3-1, all they wanted last Friday night in Ruleville before the game came to an end.
“We let them off the hook,” said Edwards High Head Coach Quintarus McCray.
“The game was right there for the taking and we played hard; but we must learn how to win games. We’ll get there,” he continued.
In this contest, the Tigers were up by an 8-6 margin before the Hornets scored a touchdown to close out the first half of play.
Facing a 14-8 deficit to open the second half, “We had a very flat third quarter,” said Coach McCray.
Despite that flatness, the Tigers were still only down by a 20-14 margin as the game entered the fourth quarter of play.
However, both teams scored twice in that final period allowing the Hornets’ narrow lead to stand for the victory.
The Tigers offense recorded its initial points of the game when senior Jermaine Hooper turned in a 15-yard dash to the end zone.
In the second half, the Tigers struck again with a special team scoring contribution.
It would be fellow senior Anthony Townsend who picked up a blocked Hornets punt and raced 60 yards for the Tigers’ second score of the night.
Junior quarterback Ian Harris then posted his team’s third touchdown of the night with his 10-yard run to paydirt.
The Tigers’ final points in this game were earned when Townsend picked off a Hornets pass and weaved his way to a 40-yard touchdown run.
