An elderly Sunflower County woman has died after being attacked by dogs earlier this month.
Dorothy Leach, 87, was mauled in a Jan. 3 attack around 1 p.m. at her residence on the 300 block of Beaverdam Road, according to the Sunflower County Sheriff’s Office.
Leach was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She died Jan. 22 at UMMC from complications of her injuries.
Sheriff James Haywood said more than 10 dogs were removed from a nearby home on the same street following the attack.
Investigator Woody Spencer said the seized animals were picked up by the Indianola city animal control officer, since Sunflower County does not currently employ one. Spencer appeared in Sunflower County Justice Court last Friday seeking to have the dogs euthanized.
Judge Lisa Bell issued an order that the dogs be contained while the case remains under investigation. The proceeding will reconvene at 10 a.m. Feb. 3 at the Sunflower County Courthouse, with County Prosecuting Attorney Gwendolyn Jimison representing the county.
