The Enterprise-Tocsin is proud to present An Afternoon with the Maverick Gardener, featuring E-T columnist and author Felder Rushing.
The event, which will showcase Rushing’s latest book, Maverick Gardeners: Dr. Dirt and Other Determined Independent Gardeners, will take place Thursday, April 22 from 3-5 p.m. at The B.B. King Museum & Delta Interpretive Center (in the Gin).
Rushing told The E-T last week that he plans to arrive at the event in his famous truck, which has a garden itself in the bed.
“Me and the truck are coming home,” Rushing said.
This is a free event to the public. CDC guidelines and current local mandates will apply.
Rushing will deliver a presentation and will share stories from his book, followed by signing copies of Maverick Gardeners.
A native of Indianola, Rushing has been doing gardening his own way for decades, and this has taken him all over the globe.
“I’m a Delta boy,” Rushing said. “It doesn’t matter if I’m in England, Jackson, California or Japan. I’m a Delta boy.”
His latest work exemplifies his unique gifts and style when it comes to plants.
“This book has been in the works for a long time,” Rushing said, noting that he has written over two dozen, but this one is among three he counts as the most special of his books.
He has written about “slow gardeners” and “pass along plants” and this one focuses on the people behind those gardens and plants.
“This one is about the people who garden the way they want to,” he said. “They’re not rebels. They’re not pushing back. They just simply do their own thing and wish the people would understand, because they’ve got a lot to share. It’s about the personalities and what makes us do what we want to do and express ourselves.”
Co-sponsoring this event with The E-T are The B.B. King Museum & Delta Interpretive Center (event host), Indianola Floral Design and The Crown.
Indianola Floral Design will provide the arrangement for the event. The Crown will provide light snacks.
There will also be a drawing for door prizes for those who attend the event.
