Every game remaining on the Gentry High basketball schedule is now carrying much weight when discussing postseason play.
With only five games left to play, all are Region 4-4A dates and they begin today. Both Gentry High teams are searching for their first regional victory of the season.
Arriving at the Gentry High gymnasium today and serving as the competition will be the Wildcats of Louisville High School.
Tipping off at 6 p.m. against Louisville High, the Lady Rams will be attempting to improve on their 6-14, 0-3 won-loss mark.
Meanwhile, the Rams will follow the girls’ game and will put their 12-10,0-3 record on the line against the Wildcats.
Additional regional play occurs next Tuesday when the Gentry High squads host Greenwood High School.
This upcoming action begins at 6 p.m. when the Lady Rams will take the court with the boys’ game to follow immediately thereafter.
In this past week’s action, most recently on Tuesday night the Gentry High squads suffered home-court regional losses to Kosciusko High School.
While the Rams suffered a 60-50 loss to the Whippets, the Lady Rams were on the short end of a narrow 38-33 score.
In their loss to Kosciusko High, the Rams’ scoring effort was led by Kevion Smith’s 15 points placed on the scoreboard.
Additional double digit Gentry High scoring was provided by Draven Walker’s 14-point performance.
However, the Rams had more success this past weekend as they recorded a pair of non-regional road victories.
While last Saturday saw the Rams defeat Thomas Edwards High School of Ruleville by a 58-51 score, last Friday it was Amanda Elzy High of Greenwood falling to the Rams by a 55-41 margin.
Against the Tigers from Edwards High, it was Walker’s double double highlighting the Rams’ night of play.
Walker would burn the Tigers by scoring 20 points while also recording 10 steals in the contest.
Also reaching double digit scoring status in this game was Kylon Appleberry, who delivered 14 points against the Tigers.
Just missing double figure scoring was Otis Cole, who completed his game with nine points scored.
In the Rams’ victory over Elzy High last Friday, Walker’s shooting touch was on fire as he torched the Panthers with a team-high 23 points.
Smith also did major damage to the Panthers’ defense by dropping a dozen points through the basket.
Meanwhile, the Lady Rams also claimed one victory in their other two outings this past week.
Those wins began with last Friday’s visit to Amanda Elzy High in Greenwood, an effort which garnered the Lady Rams a 46-28 victory.
Leading the Lady Rams that night with a strong double double was Rhinya Ginn, who nearly matched her 14 points scored with 13 rebounds.
The Lady Rams also received double digit scoring from another pair of players to help their cause.
While Jazlyn Lott completed her night’s play with 11 points scored, Alaysa Minniefield was close behind with her 10-point scoring effort.
However, last Saturday, a visit to Thomas Edwards High in Ruleville dealt the Lady Rams a 45-35 loss to the Lady Tigers.
E’Miya Allen and Minniefield led Gentry High’s scoring in this contest by posting eight points apiece on the scoreboard.
