The Sunflower County Consolidated School District hosted its third annual Special Olympics on May 16 at Gentry High School’s Perry S. Price Memorial Stadium, bringing together students, staff, families and community members to celebrate inclusion, perseverance, and achievement.
Themed “All In, All Abilities, All Heart,” the event featured a wide range of athletic competitions, including 50-meter assisted runs, 100-meter wheelchair races, softball throws, and walk/run races for students of all abilities. The day began with a torch lighting ceremony and a parade of participants, highlighting the spirit of unity and encouragement.
Participants from across the district showcased their talents, with everyone receiving medals and ribbons — first, second, or third place — along with participation medals for all students. After the competitions, everyone enjoyed pizza from Domino’s Pizza, creating a festive and joyful atmosphere filled with smiles, cheers, and camaraderie.
Children participating in the event had a fun-filled day, sharing laughs and enjoying the activities. Teachers, staff, and volunteers, including members of the Chick-fil-A leadership group, helped out and cheered on the students, making the day even more memorable.
Superintendent Dr. Miskia Davis expressed pride in the event’s success.
“This is our most wonderful time of the year,” she said. “We get to show our students love and appreciation, celebrating all they can do. It’s inspiring to see the joy and participation from everyone.”
Incoming Superintendent James Johnson-Waldington, who was present at the event, shared his first impressions.
“I’ve never experienced anything like this,” Waldington said. “The camaraderie, the hugs, the fun — it’s just wonderful. Events like this will definitely continue in our district.”
Mrs. Kenyia Procter-Davis, the district’s Exceptional Education Director, emphasized the importance of inclusion.
“Special Olympics showcases our students’ different abilities,” she said. “Everyone is recognized and celebrated here.”
The event drew a large crowd of families and friends, all eager to support and cheer for the students. The day wrapped up with heartfelt moments, medals, ribbons, and a shared sense of achievement and community. As everyone left, they looked forward to future events that promote kindness, inclusion, and fun for all.
