The past couple of weeks has shown why Mississippi weather is so unique.
During that time, we have had lows in the 50’s to highs in the 90’s. The low temperatures can cause some homeowners to slack off on watering and causing some plants to wilt when the temperatures jump into the mid 90’s.
One way to help protect your plants is to replace the mulch in the beds; especially if you did not mulch in the spring. So, as you pull out summer annuals in preparation for planting fall and winter annuals consider putting out a fresh layer of mulch.
One benefit of mulching is improving the aesthetics of your flower beds and gardens but it also moderates soil temperature, retains moisture, and controls weeds.
Over the year mulch will degrade and most colored mulch will lose its color. Never pile mulch around tree trunks and stems and it should never be more than 4 to 6 inches deep. There are many different options of mulches available such as pine straw, shredded bark, and pine chips as well as many others. Try some mulch this season and bring out your colors in you flower bed.
