Many years ago when my wife and I first married I can remember her mother singing or humming the tune of “I Come to the Garden Alone”. This was her favorite song and it always put joy in her heart when she sang it. She was a very pleasant person and I never heard her say an unkind word about anyone.
Her grandchildren would always get her to sing this song at family gatherings and she would oblige them with a smile and sing with all of her heart. She had a sweet, gentle, kind spirit and the words of this song meant so much to her and she lived them until she went home to be with the Lord several years ago.
This old time favorite was authored by C. Austin Miles in 1913 and has remained one of the most sung hymns. Read the words of this song and you will understand why it is so strong and meaningful. Adhering to the commands of the Lord and spending time with Him are some of the greatest attributes that a person can have. If the people of the world would spend time talking to the Lord and reading His Word then we would have a more peaceful place to live in and Satan wouldn’t have time to attack us and lead us astray with worldly values and gestures.
(1) “I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses, and the voice I hear falling on my ear the son of God discloses. (Refrain: And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I am his own; and the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.)
(2) He speaks, and the sound of his voice, is so sweet the birds hush their singing, and the melody that he gave to me within my heart is ringing. (Refrain;)
(3) I’d stay in the garden with him though the night around me be falling, but he bids me go; thru the voice of woe his voice to me is calling. (Refrain;)”
My wish is that everyone had their garden they could go to and have their individual chats with Jesus. Many will say that He will not talk to you but I know that He will. You have to know Him as your Lord and Savior and have Him within your heart. No, He will not answer you if your reject Him and you don’t believe that He is the one and only true God.
My mother-in-law knew Jesus personally and He knew her. I am confident that she is singing praises to Him this very day as she lives with Him in Paradise. She knew His gentle peace and shared it with everyone she was around while on earth. I remember the first words she said to me when I asked for her daughter’s hand in marriage. She told me yes and that my future wife and I should put Jesus first in our marriage and let Him lead us through the future. Great advice given and was well received by both of us. We have lived by this advice everyday of our marriage. I still miss my mother-in-law to this day and her sweet gentle spirit!
Prayer: Thank you Lord for the sweet, gentle, and understanding mother-in-law you allowed me to know and love. I praise you for her guidance and for her love for you. Amen.
