Summer is definitely here. Kids are out of school and vacations are being planned. Even though some were able to use Memorial Day weekend as a mini-vacation, most are awaiting that much needed time away. Here are a few tips for those gardeners that hate to leave their lawns and gardens for a week only to return to more work.
* If you have the local garden remember that you can certainly exchange fresh vegetables in return for someone to pick up the mail, take care of pets and lawn
* If your garden is secluded and no one to help out, attempt to harvest as much produce as possible before your departure. This will help keep the plants productive
* Take some extra time to make sure the yard, flower beds and garden are watered, weeded, and manicured prior to leaving. Not only could this be a conversation piece for your neighbors but it will also deter any unwanted visitors who might think you are away
* If you don't have an automatic sprinkler system, a small battery operated system can be very economical to maintain the garden and flower bed while you are gone
* Place potted plants and hanging baskets in the shade and group them together. This will be very helpful if you have some one that has agreed to help you water so they don't miss a plant
Whether your destination is the mountains or the beach, your vacation should be about spending time with family and friends. These steps will help ease your mind and ensure that your plants remain vibrant and look just as good on the return, as they did the day you left.
