What is your meaning of respect? What does Jesus say about respect? We are told in Romans 12:10 to “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
I was reminded of a story that many people in today’s society show little respect in. This story was told by a lady who had pulled her car over to the side of the road in respect to a passing funeral procession. Even though it was raining very hard she noticed that an active duty soldier had gotten out of his Jeep and stood at attention until the entire procession had passed. This was truly an attitude of respect given by a young soldier. So many people in today’s world show little or no compassion for a passing funeral procession.
When I was growing up I was taught respect from my parents, school teachers, grandparents, elderly people that I was around and just about anyone that was older than me. It was something that was drilled into me especially when I was in basic training for the military. When I started in the work force I earned respect from others by the way I treated them. Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:12; “So in everything, do unto others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
In today’s society it seems that many of the younger generation have loss the respect for others and certain situations. Our world has changed and in today’s politically correct nation it seems that many have lost their moral values and respect for others and certain situations. We have become a nation of people that puts ME first and anyone else after that.
I often wonder what this world will be like after our generation is gone. With the liberal thinking of society, and I blame much of this on the baby boomer generation, the world has gotten away from the “Golden Rule” Jesus gave us.
We have become a society of equality for everyone and I think this is good but we shouldn’t lose sight of our manners, dignity and character. We should respect everyone and their values but today’s thinking sure makes it hard to do this.
When it comes to respecting a funeral procession we should take the time and pull our vehicle over and let it pass. Many people do this but so many people do not because they are in a hurry to get somewhere. All of us want to be on time but we shouldn’t allow our hurry to lose sight of our respect for others.
