All of us go through life making choices whether we want to or not. God gave us the right to decide on what we do and when we do it. Many times these choices are going to affect us whether it has been in the past, in the future, or at this moment.
As a parent or grandparent we are telling this statement to our children or grandchildren hoping that they will look at what they are doing and make the right choices for their being. Life is tough and isn’t fair. What we do with it depends on how we respond to situations and how well we are thinking about our future.
The world tells us “If it feels good, just do it.” I don’t think this is a really bad statement but it depends on how you look at it. If you have the opportunity to help someone and it feels right to do it and you feel that the Lord has led you to this point, then by all means do it! However there are many decisions that will be thrown at you, especially during your teenage years. Opportunities are going to be given to you about your changing body and the changes that you are experiencing are going to test your faith and wisdom. These years are the most vulnerable because of experiences with smoking, alcohol, drugs, sex, etc. These are decisions that could affect you for the rest of your life.
As you go into the business world and have an opportunity to work with others then choices are going to be made concerning moving forward with the aid of untruthful ventures or shady deals that will enhance you monetarily. If we choose the wrong way then we are going to hurt others and our friendships. Trust, reliability, and honor are going to become suspect and our reputation is going to be tainted.
The biggest choice we are going to make in our lifetime is the choice of accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior or rejecting Him as so many people will. If we understand that, allowing Jesus Christ into our heart will give us a guide to understanding the world. Having the Holy Spirit within us gives us an inward friend to help guide us in the right direction.
In Philippians 4:8 we are told, “Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.” As Christians we can believe in this verse and make decisions concerning our future. The Lord will provide us a way to overcome the sins of the world but we have to depend on Jesus and look to Him for guidance.
The saying “you are what you are because of choices you make” is certainly true. Depending on the world for our future will lead to our demise but depending on Jesus Christ will give us eternal life and an everlasting home with Him.
Prayer: Thank you Lord for the assurance that when I accept you as my Lord and Savior I will spend eternity with you. Forgive me of my sins and my leaning on the world for my future. Amen.
