Firefighters from across Sunflower County held their regular Third Thursday Training in Ruleville on June 19, 2025. Eighteen firefighters from Indianola, Inverness, Moorhead, Ruleville and Linn-Steiner-Roundaway fire departments took part in the three-hour evolution. Vehicles for the training were donated by Redwine Salvage & Sales.
The Sunflower County Fire Coordinator's Office sponsors ten Third Thursday Trainings, each lasting two to four hours, and two, 12-hour Mississippi State Fire Academy courses annually. The county also regularly plans to conduct at least one certification-level course such as Volunteer Firefighter I, Volunteer Firefighter II, Volunteer Fire Officer I & II, and Emergency Medical Responder, all of which range between 30 and 80 classroom hours.
"The effort our firefighters put into training speaks to their commitment to serving their communities. By taking hours away from home, the men and women that make up our volunteer ranks demonstrate their dedication to the people of Sunflower County. We've hosted firefighters from neighboring counties, and some from as far as Union and Newton counties. Our training staff prepares the training calendar up to a year in advance, and in certain cases even beyond that time frame", said Fire Coordinator Mitch Ramage.
