The world of Gospel music—and indeed the world—feels a little quieter today with the passing of the incredible Momma Mosie Burks.
For us, her voice was more than just music; it was a lifeline, a source of strength that helped us through our toughest times. I still remember meeting her once in Greenville, Mississippi, at the Washington County Convention Center. Even that brief encounter solidified what her songs already taught me: she was a true beacon of hope.
Momma Mosie wasn't just a solo artist; she was also a lead singer with the renowned Mississippi Mass Choir. This role showcased her powerful voice to an even wider audience, cementing her legacy in gospel music history. Whether singing with the choir or on her own, her unwavering faith shone through.
Her songs weren’t just catchy tunes—they carried powerful messages. We often turned to her music when sadness or depression tried to take hold, and her voice always seemed to say, "No, I’m Not Tired Yet."
That phrase became a personal motto for many—a reminder to keep pushing forward, even when life feels overwhelming. Her spirit, even through speakers, was contagious.
One song that always resonated with me was "This Morning When I Rose (I didn’t have no doubt).”
It speaks of trusting in a higher power, knowing that even when you "didn’t have no doubt," help would be there. It’s a message that reminds us to keep faith, especially when everything seems out of our control.
She helped us believe that "God Has Brought Me from a Mighty Long Way," and that no matter what, we could persevere.
Momma Mosie’s music also had a joyful side. Her song "I Love to Praise Him" captures that feeling of pure happiness and gratitude. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to lift your hands and sing along—an invitation to appreciate the good in life. She truly had a "grip" on her faith and shared that strength generously.
When she sang "I’m On My Way," you could feel the journey and purpose in her voice. She lived a life dedicated to her beliefs, sharing her incredible talent and spreading messages of hope and perseverance.
Though her journey here on Earth has ended, her legacy, like her melodies, will continue to inspire.
Momma Mosie Burks showed us all that even after "Running for Jesus a long time," and singing for many years, you can truly say, "I’m Not Tired Yet."
Her powerful voice and spirit lifted countless souls—including ours.
She may be gone, but her songs, her message, and the way she made us feel will live on forever.
Thank you, Momma Mosie, for every note.
